Food Addiction, Weight Loss & Life Coaching

You “eat clean” 80% of the time, you exercise 5-7 days a week, you don’t smoke, you only drink on special occasions…you even do a 5k Turkey Trot every Thanksgiving, and you not only participate in weight-loss challenges – you CRUSH THEM every time.

Somehow though, you manage to put all the weight back on, and maybe a bonus pound or two. You KNOW how to do this healthy lifestyle thing, so what gives?!?!

BREATHE! –> You are not alone!

We live in a society that is FILLED with information and high expectations. We are doers. We see a problem, we take action, we learn how to fix it, we roll up our sleeves and go full force into “fixing it”…and we expect it to be “fixed” indefinitely.

You are not a machine…

Treating obesity as a problem to “fix” IS the problem. Being overweight is a symptom of a much larger, far more complicated issue, and lack of knowledge rarely has anything to do with it. (refer to Weight Loss Coaching for more)

If you know alcohol, cigarettes, soda, fast food, pizza, chips, fried foods, baked goods and the like are doing nothing positive for your body, but you are compelled to ingest them, chances are the root of your problem has more to do with your emotions and deep-seeded self-defeating thought processes than your intellect.

Our relationship with food begins on our first day of life. We cry. We get food. We feel better. How that relationship evolves over the course of a lifetime is very complicated. The connection between food and our emotions is powerful. We are human beings – not human doings. When you are too busy “doing” and not taking time to “be,” we accumulate decades of unprocessed feelings. We lose touch with how we feel and how to feel; this is the root of the problem.

Stuffing our faces with calorie-rich, carb-rich, sweet, salty, and fatty foods is how we keep those feelings stuffed. These foods can be just as intoxicating and mind-numbing as any pharmaceutical – they are legal, readily available, and socially acceptable. These substances provide us with the fastest, cheapest, easiest way to mentally and emotionally check-out and the consequences they afflict us with distract us from ever having to acknowledge what is taking place. It is the perfect storm for a life of self-destruction and denial.

OK, so now I know what the real problem is…
just tell me how to fix it!

A mind and soul filled with repressed and suppressed feelings and emotions is a dangerous place to go alone. You can’t fix your thinking with your own thinking. That is why you need a Life Coach to navigate you through this minefield and help you reach higher ground.

How is Life Coaching different than therapy?

A Life Coach doesn’t diagnose or treat disorders and diseases of the mind. Life Coaching is about honoring you as a person and your ability to heal and solve your own issues with guidance and direction – to meet you where you are and build you up to where you want to be.

You know you better than anyone else. A Life Coach can help you see things from a different perspective and walk you through the mental blocks that are holding you back from becoming the person you want to be and living the life you long to live. Coaching is about helping you actualize and set goals, develop a plan of action and support you along the way.

Open the Door to Sustained Weight Loss

If you are one of those people who struggle to lose weight or keep the weight off long-term, Life Coaching may be the key to achieving and sustaining weight loss.

You have tried it all— South Beach, Atkins, Vegan, Paleo, Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, Low-Carb, High-Fat, Low-Fat, Intermittent Fasting…and the list goes on.

You’ve done challenges, joined groups, went to meetings, met with a registered dietician and nutritionist, read every blog-post, listen to podcasts… You have made many concerted efforts and some of them were even successful for a while. But slowly old habits crept back in and you found yourself falling back into the same patterns and same routines (or lack thereof) and you ended up gaining every ounce back…and usually, a few bonus pounds.

If weight loss were about knowledge—if it was about knowing the difference between what is “the right food” or “the right way to eat” we would all have figured it out by now via Google. Quite frankly if I were to write a book about nutrition and weight loss it wouldn’t even fill one page. to be one page. It’s a simple as this;

Don’t eat anything that doesn’t rot.

Only eat when you’re physically hungry.

Stop eating when you’re no longer physically hungry.

Now that you have read my pearls of wisdom, you should be well on your way to sustained weight loss… Unfortunately, knowledge is only a small part of this process.

Simple is NOT to be confused with “Easy”!

Think about it for a minute—why do we relentlessly seek the answer when the answer is so simple? We do this because we don’t like the real answer! We want it to be repackaged with a glimmer of hope that we can eat what we want, when we want and magically attain the results we are seeking whilst doing so.

When said results don’t appear the way we hope or expect them to or on our timeline, we get discouraged, annoyed and things start to unravel.

Another phenomenon to contend with is what I call the “skinny high”. The skinny high is intoxicating and addictive, but just like any other drug, once the high wears off you crash…HARD.

If you have ever been drunk on compliments, and positive attention for dramatic body transformation, you know this phenomenon all too well.

Everything is peachy while you are basking in the limelight, doused in confidence and clothed in a svelte new wardrobe. Sadly, this streak of awesome is short lived. When the comments diminish, and you realize that this transformation didn’t change your failing marriage or warrant the promotion you had hoped for, cupcakes and pizza start to call your name.

Welcome to the rollercoaster ride of fluctuating bodyweight. Oprah is one of many VIP passengers on this tumultuous ride.

The root cause of most of our struggles with food is more tedious and monotonous. The key components to sustained weight loss are support, accountability, patience and the willingness to be a little uncomfortable.

Recovery Coaching

Addiction is a lifelong struggle. You can put the disease of addiction into remission through abstinence, but abstinence alone will never yield a happy, healthy, fulfilling life. Recovery is an ongoing process that enables one to be free from cravings, compulsions and addictive behaviors.

Treatment will get you sober, but it’s crucial to continue to work at developing and maintaining healthy coping strategies, thought processes and to overcome the default mindset that afflicts those who struggle with addiction. The reality is that no one is magically “fixed” once they complete treatment.

Sponsorship is one option that works for many in recovery; unfortunately, it isn’t always easy to find a sponsor who is available, safe, healthy and willing to devote time, energy and attention towards helping someone in recovery.

Choosing the wrong sponsor can be shattering to anyone in recovery.

Unbeknownst to many of the newly sober, how many years one has in recovery is by no means an indication of how healthy, safe and sane one is. Anyone in early sobriety is exceptionally vulnerable to engaging in unhealthy relationships, and once one has been manipulated, controlled or betrayed by a sponsor, it can compromise your recovery. Even worse is having a sponsor who relapses. Few things are more devastating to a recovering addict than having their primary support system fall so hard back into the grips of addiction.

Recovery coaching gives you a qualified, certified, stable support system to carry you through all that life throws your way—it can be the difference between sustained long-term sobriety and relapse.

Why You Need a Life Coach

Simply put, it’s hard to see yourself clearly from your own eyes. We all need clarity and perspective at different points in our lives—why not hire an experienced, unbiased professional to provide you with the focus, clarity, and direction you need to lead a more prosperous and fulfilling life?

Focus is critical in reaching your life goals, and it’s all too easy to get distracted by the next shiny object commanding your valuable time and attention. Shiny does not always equate to happy–having someone help you to keep your eyes on the prize is essential to achieving your goals.

Clarity is grossly underrated. Quite frankly, most people have no clue what they want from life and often when said people achieve what they genuinely believe is wanted and needed they find it wasn’t as fulfilling as one had hoped. A coach is there to inspire you to examine your life and determine the things that mean the most to you and guide you along your journey to actualizing your vision.

Direction is imperative! Think of a coach as the equivalent to Google Maps. Having that kind of direction opens up endless possibilities that you never knew existed.

You are only blessed with one life, why not make it a truly amazing experience.
